Ingredients

  • 4 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1/2 (16-ounce) loaf day-old French bread, torn into small pieces
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 16 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • 10 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/3 cup white wine
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 3 green onions, chopped, plus more, to taste, for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1 –Place the sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until it is browned. Drain the excess grease, and set it aside.

Step 2 –Spread the torn bread pieces on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 3 –Drizzle the melted butter over the bread pieces, then sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread.

Step 4 –Cover with the shredded cheese.

Step 5 –In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, the milk, the white wine, the Dijon mustard, and 3 of the chopped green onions.

Step 6 –Season with the black pepper and the red pepper flakes.

Step 7 –Pour the egg mixture over all of the ingredients in the baking dish.

Step 8 –Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to overnight.

Step 9 –Remove the dish from the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to baking to allow it to come to room temperature.

Step 10 –Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Step 11 –Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake, about 30 minutes.

Step 12 –Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Step 13 –Remove from the oven and then spread the sour cream evenly over the top.

Step 14 –Sprinkle the parmesan cheese on top of the sour cream layer.

Step 15 –Return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is starting to brown slightly.

Step 16 –Serve garnished with the extra chopped green onions.
