Slim N’ Trim Burgers

Why should watching your waistline stop you from eating your favorites? The trick is to replace your naughty cravings with healthier, but still delicious, alternatives, like these Slim N’ Trim Burgers! These unbelievable turkey burgers are juicy, golden, savory, basted with sweet-and-smoky barbeque sauce, and topped with melted sharp cheddar. Oh yes, that already sounds marvelous, right? Turkey burgers may be lower in fat than beef burgers, but they certainly don’t skimp on flavor! Slip into a new dinnertime favorite with Slim N’ Trim Burgers!

Ingredients

For the burgers:

  • 2 pounds lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup white or yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cremini mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup barbeque sauce, plus more, for basting
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • cooking spray, to taste
  • 6 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 6 hamburger buns

Optional toppings:

  • condiments, such as ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise, to taste, for serving
  • green leaf lettuce, to taste, for serving
  • red onion, thinly sliced, to taste, for serving
  • tomato, thinly sliced, to taste, for serving
  • avocado, sliced, to taste, for serving

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the grill to medium heat.

Step 2 –Line a baking sheet with foil.

Step 3 –Place the ground turkey, the onion, the mushrooms, 1/4 cup of the barbeque sauce, and the Cajun seasoning in a large mixing bowl and mix well using your clean hands.

Step 4 –Divide the mixture into six even balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 5 –Using your clean hands, flatten the balls into 1/2-3/4-inch-thick patties.

Step 6 –Spray both sides of the turkey patties with the cooking spray.

Step 7 –Transfer the patties to the grill and cook until the exteriors are nicely seared and the internal temperature in the thickest part reaches 165 degrees F, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 8 –Baste the tops of the burgers with the remaining barbeque sauce.

Step 9 –Add a piece of the cheese to each patty and cover the grill, allowing the cheese to melt, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 10 –Discard the foil from the prepared baking sheet and replace it with a clean sheet of foil for the cooked burgers.

Step 11 –Transfer the patties to the prepared baking sheet.

Step 12 –From the baking sheet, transfer the patties to the buns and serve with your favorite toppings.
