Crispy Apple Fritter Rings

These donuts are a refreshing take on a classic! Crispy Apple Fritter Rings are battered and fried apples, so they’re moist but still crunchy, crisp and filled with sweet tartness. Coated with powdered sugar and warm cinnamon, Crispy Apple Fritter Rings are an energizing, carnival-style snack that you could eat any time, even for breakfast! And why not? They have apples in them, after all!

Ingredients

  • canola oil, to taste, for frying
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon, plus more, optional, for garnish
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 6 apples, Fuji or Granny Smith
  • powdered sugar, optional, to taste, for topping

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat a heavy-bottomed pot filled with the canola oil over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a bowl, combine the flour, the baking powder, the nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, the sugar, and the salt.

Step 3 –Add the eggs and the buttermilk and whisk until just combined.

Step 4 –Using biscuit cutters, cut out rings from the apples in varying sizes.

Step 5 –Dip the apple rings in the batter.

Step 6 –Carefully lift the rings out of the batter, letting the excess drip off, and slowly and carefully place them in the hot oil.

Step 7 –Let the apple rings cook on both sides until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Step 8 –While still warm, dust with the powdered sugar and the extra cinnamon.

Step 9 –Serve immediately.
