Ingredients
- 3/4 cup self-rising flour
- 1 cup self-rising corn meal
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1 small onion, finely minced
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- garlic powder, to taste
- onion powder, to taste
- Old Bay seasoning, to taste
- 3/4 cup buttermilk, plus more, to taste
- canola oil, to taste
Directions
Step 1 –In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and the cornmeal and mix to combine.
Step 2 –Add the egg, the onion, the sugar, the garlic powder, the onion powder, and the Old Bay seasoning to the flour mixture and stir to combine.
Step 3 –Add 3/4 cup of the buttermilk to the flour mixture and stir with a fork until just blended. The mixture should be fairly stiff; if the mixture seems too dry, add the extra buttermilk, a little at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
Step 4 –In a deep fryer, heat the oil to 375 degrees F.
Step 5 –Drop the dough by the teaspoon into the hot oil and fry until the hush puppies rise to the top and are golden-brown, about 2-3 minutes
Step 6 –Transfer the cooked hush puppies from the fryer to paper towels to drain.
Step 7 –Repeat the frying process until all of the batter is used.
Step 8 –Serve hot.
