How Long Can A Child Go Without Urinating (And Why)?

Exact Answer: 2 To 6 Hours

The human body functions automatically on its own as long as all the organs are working properly. For the whole system to work properly, all the organs must work properly. Some people think that organs fail and do not work properly because of some habits the certain person follows or due to their type of lifestyle.

Though it is true, there are also other reasons why a person goes through organ failures. Organ failure has been noticed even in newborn babies, and this determines that sometimes organ failure does not have anything to do with lifestyle or food habits.

Although, some minor health problems are sometimes mistaken for organ failures. One such health issue is bladder dysfunction. Many people fail to notice it, while some ignore it. Many new parents think that their child has bladder dysfunction, without knowing that it is normal for the child to urinate at regular intervals.

How Long Can A Child Go Without Urinating?

Age of the childTime to fill the bladder
Infant1 to 2 hours
Toddler2 to 3 hours
Child2 to 4 hours

When a person is going through something serious or if they are on their way to somewhere in a hurry, some people forget to eat, drink water, and some people even forget to urinate, which is very wrong. A person must empty their bladder at regular intervals because if some controls their bladder for very long when they have the urge to pee, it can lead to the formation of kidney stones. When a person controls their urine, the area will start settling inside the kidney, and as time passes by, it can lead to the formation of stone-like things that can cause pain when one tries to urinate.

Though children above the age of 10, along with teenagers and elders can control themselves from urinating, infants, toddlers, and children below the age of 9 to 10 normally don’t know how to. Normally, a bladder is considered full and must be emptied when around 2 cups of urine are filled in the bladder, which makes the bladder full, and creates the urge to urinate.

The adult body normally takes about 9 to 10 hours to fill the bladder, but since the bodies of babies are tiny, it only takes a while for the bladder to fill. A person can wait for 1 to 2 hours after their bladder is full to urinate, but waiting beyond that can damage the person’s physical health.

Why Does A Child Go For That Long Without Urinating?

Though adult bodies take around 9 to 10 hours to fill the bladder, bodies of infants and toddlers take much less time. According to research, the bodies of infants below the age of 1 take about 1 to 2 hours for the bladder to fill, while it takes about 2 to 3 hours for the bladders of toddlers to fill since their bladders are a bit bigger.

A child’s bladder takes about 2 to 4 hours to fill since the size of a child’s bladder is around 7 to 14 ounces. The bladder of a toddler is around 3 to 5 ounces in size, while an infant is around just 1 to 2 ounces.

Though the bladder is an expandable organ, even it cannot expand after a while. Normally, a bladder can take about 16 to 24 ounces of fluid, but once the amount of urine reaches the fill line in the bladder, the brain receives a signal which indicates its time to urinate.

Conclusion

Though a person might think his or her bladder is full when they experience this signal, the bladder is just a quarter full.

Studying the anatomy of the human body, doctors and scientists have concluded that a normal adult can go about 8 to 9 hours without peeing. After that, it becomes quite dangerous. Since children don’t exactly know how to control their urination, they pee every hour or two.

Although, there is a popular fact that children can go for at least 2 to 3 hours without peeing and it is not that dangerous. It all depends on the size of their bladder, and how long it takes for the body to fill the bladder.
