Southern Tea Sandwiches

Tea parties are one of those things that feel fun as children and yet only become more fun as you grow up and actually get to start hosting your own real parties! But it isn’t a proper tea party without the right dishes to nosh on, like Southern Tea Sandwiches! Toasty slices of bread envelop a creamy, bright interior of cream cheese, tomato, and an herbaceous sauce of your choosing. A little red onion adds sharpness and helps bring out the natural sweetness of your tea as you sip and relax through the afternoon. Southern Tea Sandwiches are light and elegant snacks that feel like a full meal, exactly what you want from teatime!

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons pesto sauce, chimichurri sauce, or herb sauce
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 12 thin white bread slices, toasted
  • 1 large tomato, cut into 6 slices
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced

Directions

Step 1 –Stir the cream cheese, the pesto sauce, the pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt together in a small bowl until it is combined.

Step 2 –Spread the cream cheese mixture on one side of 6 of the bread slices.

Step 3 –Place 1 tomato slice and 1/4 of the onion slices on the remaining bread slices.

Step 4 –Sprinkle the cream cheese mixture with the remaining salt.

Step 5 –Place the cream cheese mixture-topped bread slices on top of the veggie-topped bread slices.

Step 6 –Cut the sandwiches in half and serve immediately.
