Yummy Baked Apples

Isn’t it funny how certain smells can take you right back to a moment in time? Well, the aroma that exudes from these Yummy Baked Apples is one that takes us back to our elementary school days, visiting our local apple orchard. It was truly the best day of the school year! We were always so excited to bring our apple collection home to mom, knowing that dessert that evening would be something very special. With the tender baked apples branching out into a delightful melted field of sugar and cinnamon harmony, we simply could not wait for this season of dessert! But you don’t have to wait for the orchards to open up. Hop on the bus and get these Yummy Baked Apples on the road to your after-dinner, or anytime really, dessert experience. Take it from us, these will be the best dessert of the year!

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 4-5 large Honeycrisp or Gala apples, peeled, cored, and sliced about 1/3 to 1/2-inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, optional, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter, cut into 6 pieces
  • vanilla ice cream, optional, to taste

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking dish.

Step 3 –In a large bowl, add the brown sugar, the granulated sugar, the ground cinnamon, and the cornstarch and stir until well-combined.

Step 4 –Add the apple slices to the sugar mixture and toss until well-coated.

Step 5 –Sprinkle the lemon juice over the coated apples, add the walnuts, and toss until well-coated.

Step 6 –Transfer the apple mixture, including all of the sugar and juices, into the prepared baking dish and then evenly dot the top of the apple mixture with the butter pieces.

Step 7 –Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, transfer to the oven and stir every 15 minutes, baking until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork, about 60 minutes.

Step 8 –Transfer the baked apples from the oven to a wire rack to cool, about 5 minutes.

Step 9 –In individual serving bowls, add the baked apples and serve with the vanilla ice cream.
