It’s fun to try new things, but sometimes you just have a craving for the classics. And let’s be honest, nothing can ever compare to an Old-Fashioned Apple Bake! Your taste buds will tingle as they experience the familiar flavors of the jammy cinnamon apples topped with melted cheese and buttery cracker crumbs. Mmm, it just tastes like home, and nothing fancy or daring will ever taste better. There will always be room in our hearts (and bellies) for a good Old-Fashioned Apple Bake!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup apple cider or apple juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 6 cups Honeycrisp apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
- 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 sleeve buttery round crackers, crushed
- 1 cup sharp or mild cheddar cheese, shredded
Directions
Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 –Coat an 11×7-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 3 –In a mixing bowl, whisk the apple cider and the cornstarch together.
Step 4 –In a large skillet over medium heat, add the apples, the brown sugar, the lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, and the salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples release their liquid and start to soften, about 5-6 minutes.
Step 5 –Stir the cornstarch mixture into the apple mixture and cook until it has thickened and is glossy, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 6 –Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 7 –In a medium bowl, add the butter and the remaining cinnamon and mix together.
Step 8 –Add the crushed crackers to the cinnamon-butter and toss to combine.
Step 9 –Sprinkle the cheese over the apple mixture and top with the cracker mixture.
Step 10 –Bake the apple bake until the filling is bubbly and topping is browned, about 30 minutes.
Step 11 –Serve warm.
