Ingredients

For the apple fritter bake:

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon, divided
  • nutmeg, to taste
  • 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored, diced
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 6 large croissants, chopped into chunks
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon apple sauce
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten

For the icing:

  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream, plus more, to taste
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 3 –Add the brown sugar to the butter and stir until incorporated.

Step 4 –Add 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon and the nutmeg to the brown sugar mixture and mix well.

Step 5 –Stir the diced apples into the butter mixture and simmer until the apples are soft and achieve the desired texture, about 5 minutes.

Step 6 –In a small bowl, add the cornstarch and the water and mix well.

Step 7 –Add the cornstarch mixture to the apple mixture and stir to combine.

Step 8 –Transfer the apple mixture from the heat.

Step 9 –In a 9×13-inch casserole dish, evenly add the croissant pieces, spreading them out so they evenly cover the bottom of the pan.

Step 10 –Top the croissant pieces with the apple mixture and spread it out evenly.

Step 11 –In a separate bowl, combine 1/2 cup of the heavy cream, the apple sauce, the eggs, and the remaining cinnamon and mix well.

Step 12 –Pour the apple sauce mixture over the top of the apple mixture.

Step 13 –Bake the apple fritter bake for 25 minutes.

Step 14 –Allow the apple fritter bake to sit for 5 minutes.

Step 15 –In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of the heavy whipping cream and the powdered sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until the icing is thick but still drips from a spoon. Add more of the heavy cream, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, if needed.

Step 16 –Drizzle the icing over the apple fritter bake.

Step 17 –Serve.
